Relocating to Portland, Oregon: How Tara and Justin Found the Right Home from 1,000 Miles Away
Relocating to Portland, Oregon is an exciting life change, but it can also feel overwhelming when you’re trying to buy a home while living in another state.
That was the reality for Tara and Justin, a pair of attorneys who recently made the move from Las Vegas to the Portland area. They made the decision to move after new career opportunities arose and were seeking highly rated schools for their teenage son and a community that would support their family’s next chapter.
Like many families relocating to Portland, Oregon, they had to navigate the home search from afar while coordinating the sale of their existing home. Fortunately, with patience, preparation, and a strong team behind them, they found the perfect place to land in West Linn, a Portland suburb located in Clackamas County.
Buying a Home in Portland from Another State
After being referred to me by a friend, Tara and Justin reached out as they began planning their move to Oregon. Because they were still living in Nevada, most of our home search took place virtually.
Along with my fellow Bridge to Portland Group broker Patricia, we toured homes with them over FaceTime, discussed school district considerations, and helped them compare properties from hundreds of miles away.
Remote home shopping has become increasingly common, but it requires a different approach than a traditional local home search. Buyers often need extra information about neighborhoods, schools, amenities, and long-term resale potential because they can’t easily visit properties in person.
Why Relocating Buyers Need Local Expertise
One of the biggest challenges when relocating to Portland, Oregon is learning the differences between the area’s many communities.
The Portland metro area offers a wide range of lifestyles, from urban neighborhoods close to downtown Portland to suburban communities like West Linn, Lake Oswego, Beaverton, and Happy Valley. Each area has its own personality, housing styles, school options, and commute patterns.
For Tara and Justin, finding a community with strong schools was a top priority. They had already narrowed their search to West Linn thanks to its highly regarded schools, parks, and family-friendly atmosphere. (Plus, our mutual friends also live nearby!)
Having a local real estate team on the ground allowed them to gain insights that would have been difficult to gather through online research alone.
Persistence Pays Off
Relocation transactions don’t always follow a straight path.
During their home search, Tara and Justin had offers accepted on two different properties that ultimately weren’t the right fit. At the same time, they experienced a few unexpected starts and stops while selling their Nevada home.
Rather than rushing into a purchase, they stayed focused on their long-term goals. They asked thoughtful questions, conducted extensive due diligence, and remained committed to finding the right home instead of settling for the easiest option.
That patience ultimately paid off when the ideal property came on the market.
Finding the Right Home in West Linn
When the right home finally appeared, everything came together.
The property offered the space, location, and lifestyle Tara and Justin were hoping to find for their family. After months of planning, virtual tours, and careful decision-making, they officially became Oregon homeowners.
Seeing Tara and her son standing in front of their new home on closing day was a wonderful reminder that successful relocation isn’t just about buying a house—it’s about creating a smooth transition into a new community and a new stage of life.
