Buying a Home in Portland (With a Little Help from Friends)
One of the best parts of being a Realtor is getting to walk alongside clients as they find their perfect home. Claire’s story is one I won’t forget because it’s a wonderful reminder of why persistence, support, and teamwork matter so much when you’re ready to buy a home in Portland.
Friends at the Heart of the Process
Claire was referred to me through friends of friends, which felt perfectly fitting because friends truly became the heart of her home buying story. She invited different friends to join us for showings, giving her extra sets of eyes and perspectives. When it came time for her inspection, a few of her friends happened to be in town visiting and came along too. It was clear she wanted this to be a shared experience, and I loved seeing how her community rallied around her.
The Challenges of Buying a Home in Portland
Not every house we looked at was the right fit. The first home Claire pursued didn’t pass inspection, needing far more work than she was ready to take on. Deciding to walk away from a home after an inspection isn’t easy, but it was absolutely the right choice for her.
And sometimes that’s the reality of trying to buy a home in Portland: the first one you fall for isn’t always the one you’ll end up with. It takes patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep going.
Finding “The One”
Soon after we terminated the first contract, the cutest corner bungalow hit the market, and Claire and I both knew it was the one. We weren’t the only ones who felt that way—four other buyers submitted offers. Portland’s market can be competitive, but with a strong strategy, we made her offer stand out. When we got the call that the offer was accepted, it was such a moment of celebration!
The great news didn’t stop there. The appraisal actually came in higher than her purchase price, giving her instant equity. That’s one of the best possible outcomes when you’re looking to buy a home in Portland—walking in the door already ahead.
Moving In and Making It Hers
Now that Claire has the keys, she’s excited to start her first projects, beginning with pulling up carpet to uncover the original wood floors. Knowing Claire, I imagine she’ll have plenty of friends ready to pitch in as she turns her bungalow into a home that reflects her style and story.

Working with Claire reminded me how special it is to help someone find the right place. Her journey wasn’t always easy, but in the end, she landed exactly where she was meant to be.
